Abstract
This article uses a visit to Belfast by Winston Churchill in 1912 as a microcosm of the Third Home Rule Crisis; outlining the political and religious considerations that influenced the debate over Irish self-government and eventually encouraged the idea of partitioning the island of Ireland into two separate states.
