About Monica Lugo-Velez

Mónica E. Lugo-Vélez is a first generation college student from Puerto Rico. She received a Ph.D. degree in Latin-American & Caribbean Literature and Cultures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2020. Her interdisciplinary research reveals how cultural practices that revolve around foodways have contributed to diverse ideas of Puerto Rican national identity, authenticity, and race.

As a researcher and educator, she dedicates her time to helping students understand why learning Spanish and Latin-American & Caribbean Literature and Cultures is more than fulfilling university credits. She is a firm believer that when you know a language and understand its culture, you can broaden and deepen your awareness of cultural diversity.
