About Molly Sayre

Molly Malany Sayre earned a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Kentucky in 2016. She researches a wide range of topics in social work, primarily the causes and implications of inequality and health. For example, why is there a 20-year gap in life expectancy among some Cincinnati neighborhoods? Or, how is a child’s health or ability to read or economic success as an adult affected by her environment?

In her doctoral research, Sayre examined how allostatic load (the “wear and tear” on the body caused by stress) affects birth outcomes, exploring whether and how physiological responses to stress can influence inequality, even before a person is born. In her most recent analysis, Sayre found that higher maternal allostatic load in the third trimester predicted shorter length of gestation among full-term (> 37 weeks’ gestation) deliveries.

Sayre also conducts research on social support, educational outcomes, biopsychosocial effects of poverty and subjective social status, and the effects of inequality on the brain. Her teaching has included introductory social work courses, social work ethics, and social welfare policy.
