Abstract

This poster investigates the life, career, and travels of Klara May, the widow of Karl May. Klara May devoted her later years to promoting her late husband’s legacy, and I will focus in particular on her 1931 "Mit Karl May dutch Amerika," a travelogue documenting her solo journey through the American West to visit the places that Karl May never had. I will visually explore her career in my poster, incorporating both her written works and her photography. My poster will address the politics of representation, regarding both her representations of American Indians and representations of May in later literature and criticism. I will pay particular attention to questions of race and gender and how they affect the representation and reception of Klara May and her work.
