Abstract
Comics provide a perfect example of the platitude "a picture is worth a thousand words.” Serving as an effective platform to deliver an author's message, visuals capture readers' attention quicker than text. Visual narratives are the elements that distinguish comics from other literature. Pictures encompass the deep symbolic meaning from the author that even long texts cannot fully describe. Persepolis is a sentimental autobiography of Marjane Satrapi, who is Iranian but also has Western characteristics that value freedom and justice. Both the author and narrator herself, Marjane applies black and white aesthetics to narrate a coming-of-age tale, tracing her growth from a child to an adult during the Iranian Revolution. Throughout the story, Marjane struggles to negotiate her self-identity as the inner conflict between her origin as Iranian and her Western characteristics arises. Through a combination of visually stylized dialogue, expressionism, and varied distance of framing, page 197 illustrates a turning point in Marjane's life as she remains true to herself by embracing both her cultural identity and her value for freedom and justice.
