About Ming C. Leu

Dr. Ming-Chuan Leu is the Keith and Pat Bailey Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and former Director of the Intelligent Systems Center. He founded Missouri S&T's Center for Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies in 2004 and served as its director until May 2016. Prior to joining Missouri S&T in 1999, Dr. Leu was the director of the Manufacturing Machines and Equipment Program at the National Science Foundation from 1996 to 1999. For the NSF position he took a leave of absence from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he was the State Chair Professor in Manufacturing Productivity in the Department of Mechanical Engineering since he joined NJIT in 1987. Previously he was on the faculty of the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University from 1981 to 1987.

Dr. Leu obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1981 from the University of California at Berkeley, his M.S. degree in 1977 from the Pennsylvania State University, and his B.S. degree in 1972 from the National Taiwan University, all in Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Leu's research interests are in the area of design and manufacturing automation including additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, virtual prototyping, CAD/CAM, robotics, and machine dynamics and control. He has authored over 410 refereed publications in technical journals and conference proceedings. Also, he has written one e-book and nine book chapters, and has been granted four U.S. patents. The h-index of his published work is 43 and his publications have received over 7,070 citations (based on Google Scholar). He has delivered more than 300 technical presentations and invited seminars at professional conferences, academic institutions and research organizations in the United States and over 20 other countries. In conjunction to his research, Dr. Leu has mentored 26 Ph.D. and over 90 M.S. students who have graduated, as well as over 20 post-docs and visiting scholars. About 20 of his Ph.D. graduates and post-docs are now faculty members at various universities in the United States and five other countries.

Dr. Leu has also contributed to the engineering community through professional societies such as ASME, SME, and CIRP. Currently he is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Virtual and Physical Prototyping and the Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology. He co-organized and co-chaired the NSF CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop in 2016, NSF Workshop on Frontiers of Additive Manufacturing Research and Education in 2013, and NSF-ONR Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing Workshop in 2009. He was the main organizer and chair of the NSF Design, Service and Manufacturing Research Conference in 2006, as well as the 2012 ASME/ISCIE International Symposium on Flexible Automation (ISFA). He was the general chair of ASME's International Mechanical Engineering Conference in 2006 and the technical program chair of this conference in 2005. He was the ASME Vice President for Manufacturing, 1999-2002, and served on the Executive Committee of ASME's Manufacturing Engineering Division, 1986-1990 (including Chairman, 1989-1990). He has also organized or co-organized eight symposia in the manufacturing field.

For his excellence in research, education, and services, Dr. Leu has received several professional awards including the University of Missouri President's Award for Leadership (2017), ASME Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award (2014), ISFA Hideo Hanafusa Outstanding Investigator Award (2008), MCASTA Outstanding Scholar Award (2006), ASME Dedicated Service Award (2004), Missouri S&T AMAE Faculty Excellence Award (2001 & 2004), NJIT Harlan J. Perlis Research Award (1993), NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (1985), SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award (1985), and FPRS Wood Paper Award (1981), and was on the NJIT team to receive the CASA/SME University Lead Award (1994). He is an ASME Fellow and a CIRP Fellow, and is a member of the Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
