About Ming Gao

Dr. Gao received his Ph.D. from Penn State University in Plant Physiology.  He did postdoc research at Iowa State University and Plant Biotechnology Institute of NRC, Canada, and worked as a visiting scientist at laboratories of CNRC, France, and National Biological Center, Germany. He is the author of a large numbers of scientific articles in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals, including a featured article in the high-impact journal Plant Cell, book chapters and patents.  He is also the recipient of more than 10 million dollars of research grants as PI or co-PI during his research career, including about 1.8 million at PVAMU. He conducts research in the areas of starch biosynthesis, storage root formation, breeding and genomics in sweetpotato. He has been devoted the past eight years to breeding improved purple-fleshed sweetpotatoes, and developing resources for sweetpotato genetics and genomics studies.
