Development of recipient actions using modal expressions

Abstract
This study investigates long-term development of interactional competence which L2 learners of Japanese demonstrate with the use of modal expressions in recipient actions. Analysis of first-encounter conversations in which eight learners participated twice shows the learners' more engaged participation with the use of a greater variety of modal expressions.
