Abstract
This study investigates L1 language socialization through directives which index speakers' social roles. Videotaped naturally-occurring interaction between a three-year-old Japanese child and her mother was analyzed to investigate the differential use of directives across different types of speech events, and subsequently the role of the mother's feedback.
