About Michele Van Der Merwe

My research focuses on the use of dictionaries in education, be that at primary school level, secondary school level or university level. My aim is to promote Dictionary Education in South Africa. I am a founder member of Schoollex, an organisation consisting of academics from SA, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The aim of Schoollex is to promote the use of school dictionaries in the curriculum. Teachers need to be trained in teaching dictionary skills to children; children need to know how to make use of a dictionary and parents should know what kind of dictionary to buy for their children. Dictionary use can become a way of life and as such we can cultivate a dictionary culture in our multilingual country.
My field of interest is lexicography and I obtained the D.Litt degree in Afrikaans en Nederlands at the University of Stellenbosch in 1999. During my doctoral studies I focused on the User Perspective in Afrikaans Lexicography where I analyzed several leading Afrikaans dictionaries and made recommendations on how to increase their level of user-friendliness.
Ek is dosent in Afrikaans Kurrikulumstudies by die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, die toonaangewende universiteit vir navorsing in Afrika.
My other interest is dictionaries for specialised purposes and I was project leader of the online South African Trilingual Wine Dictionary, a joint venture of Winetech and Sawis. A specialized dictionary for Oenology and Viticulture, as well as relating subject fields was compiled. The Dictionary makes provision for three languages, namely Afrikaans, Xhosa and English.
