About Michelle Holschuh Simmons

Michelle Holschuh Simmons is currently the Outreach and Engagement Librarian at Western Illinois University. From 2015-2023, she was an Assistant then Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Monmouth College. From 2007-2015, she was a lecturer in the School of Information at San Jose State University. She has taught at the high school, college, and graduate levels, and she was the Consulting Librarian for the Arts and Humanities at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Her article "Librarians as Disciplinary Discourse Mediators: Using Genre Theory to Move toward Critical Information Literacy," published in Portal in 2005, was awarded the Ilene F. Rockman Instruction Publication of the Year Award. Her dissertation was a qualitative study of the ways that undergraduate students learn disciplinary language, with special attention paid to the role of academic librarians in this context. Michelle is the recipient of numerous teaching awards: she was awarded the Hatch Teaching Award in 2022 from Monmouth College; she is the recipient of the WISE Excellence in Online Teaching Award in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013; and she was awarded the iSchool Outstanding Teacher Award in 2011. Michelle lives in Macomb, Illinois, with her husband Bob, who teaches in the Department of Classics at Monmouth College, and their four sons, Ben, David, Marc, and Alex.
