Facilitating Inquiry-Based Learning at the Undergraduate Level
Ohio State University (2017)
  • Michal Temkin Martinez, Boise State University
Abstract
In linguistics, as in most academic fields, inquiry and intellectual curiosity play an important role in the development of research and the advancement of the discipline. While inquiry-based teaching and mentorship of student-centered work is crucially deployed in the training of graduate students, pedagogical approaches to undergraduate education remain largely instructor-focused and lecture-based, especially in introductory courses. In this talk, I will discuss Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and its history in education and illustrate how I incorporated it into how I teach an undergraduate course in phonetics and phonology.
