Abstract
The Voyage to Galapagos (VTG) web-based learning environment allows students to learn about evolution in an exploratory manner. VTG uses Bayes Nets to monitor a student's need for assistance in applying science practices and, when the probability that a student needs help reaches a threshold value, the assistance system switches on. It then uses values from the Bayes Net to decide what sequence of hints to provide to a student. The VTG system has been trialled and is currently undergoing further development, including the refinement of the Bayes Nets.
