French National Elections: Political Economic Forecasts

Abstract
French national election outcomes (presidential and National Assembly contests, 1958–1988) can be predicted rather accurately by a straightforward political economy model. The model, based on readily available, pre-election measures of economic and governmental performance, would appear to hold promise as a forecasting instrument.
