The past decade has been witness to an important transformation in the Massachusetts economy. High-tech manufacturing has gradually given way to services, especially those that put a high premium on specialized knowledge. The future growth of these “knowledge sector” industry clusters, and by extension the Massachusetts economy, will depend in important ways on the continued availability of knowledge workers to fill an increasing number of positions.
