About Michael D Birnhack

I am a Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University . I earned an LL.B. from Tel Aviv University ('96); LL.M. - NYU School of Law ('98) and J.S.D. - NYU School of Law ('00). Prior to joining Tel Aviv University, I was a senior lecturer at the University of Haifa, and co-director of the Haifa Center of Law & Technology.
My research focuses on three main subjects:
(1) Intellectual Property, especially copyright law. I wrote about the relationship between copyright law and freedom of speech in the U.S., UK & EU; ownership of copyrighted works, Israeli copyright, colonial copyright, especially in Mandate Palestine.
(2) Privacy/data protection law. My book on privacy was published in Hebrew in 2010. In English, see the relevant heading. I am a member of PRACTIS - a research consortium funded by the EU's 7th Framework Program, and am currently studying Privacy-by-Design with Eran Toch and Irit Hadar (ISF Grant, 1116/12)
(3) Information law. This area ties the previous topics (copyright, free speech, privacy), though I study also other aspects of the digital environment, and especially the general framework of law and technology.
From Sep. 2009 to Aug. 2010, I was a Member of the Board of Directors of ACRI: Association for Civil Rights in Israel. In 2004-2009 I was a member of the Public Council for the Protection of Privacy, an occasional panelist in Domain Name disputes in Israel.
During 2011-12 I was on a sabbatical leave at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London.
