Abstract
The ways in which significant social institutions are initiated and perpetuated are intriguing to both historians and sociologists. These developmental processes are most visible when examined in the evolution of recent occurrences. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, more commonly known as the Mormon Church, is one such comparatively recent institution. Reviewing it as a particular instance of institutional survival provides an opportunity to uncover processes that may allow for more inclusive generalizations.
