Abstract
The following discussion is based on three years of participant observation by the author at a restaurant/nightclub in Salt Lake City, Utah. The description is sociologically framed utilizing concepts developed primarily by Robert Merton and Erving Goffman, with additional concepts taken from the writings of Talcott Parsons and Alfred Schutz. There are also insights taken from George Orwell’s experiences as a hotel worker in Paris.
