Presenter(s) Biography

Robert Schoen currently serves as the associate director of the Florida Center for Research in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (better known as FCR-STEM) at the Learning Systems Institute at Florida State University. Prior to his position at FCR-STEM, Dr. Schoen served as the state supervisor of mathematics at the Florida Department of Education. His educational background is in mathematics, meteorology, and education. Dr. Schoen’s research focuses on the mathematical education of teachers, evaluation of educational interventions (primarily through randomized controlled trials), and cognitive processes of children and adults in mathematics. Some of his recent work includes randomized controlled trials of teacher professional development programs called Cognitively Guided Instruction (commonly known as CGI), Thinking Mathematics, Mathematics Formative Assessment System (commonly known in Florida as MFAS), and a ten-day institute in statistics and probability that was implemented as part of the FCR-STEM Learn program. Within those studies, he has created valid and reliable assessment instruments to measure teacher mathematical knowledge for teaching at the early elementary level, teacher beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning, student achievement, and students’ cognitive processes.

Dr. Jodi Marshall is the Executive Vice President of Business and School Solutions for Florida Virtual School. She began her career in education more than 20 years ago as a middle school literacy project teacher. She went on to become a reading specialist in Los Angeles, CA, and then found her way back to Florida. In 2002, Dr. Marshall teaching English with FLVS. A graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Dr. Marshall obtained a Master’s in English Education from the University of Central Florida. She earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Miami. A few years later, she earned an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership.
