About Michael Monzel, MD

Michael J. Monzel, MD, joined HSPB in 2007. Board certified in gastroenterology, he has practiced for 24 years in Lewiston, Maine prior to moving to Florida. While in Maine he cofounded one of the largest regional referral gastroenterology practices in Northern New England. He founded one of Maine's largest chronic liver disease treatment clinics and subspecialized in therapeutic endoscopy. He was director of the endoscopy department at Central Maine Medical Center for 15 years. He served as President of the Maine Gastroenterology Society and was an advocate for physician and nursing education. Recent research interests included outcomes in screening colonoscopy and outcomes in community based treatment of chronic hepatitis C. Dr. Monzel graduated from Marietta College with a bachelor's degree in biology and was awarded membership in Phi Beta Kappa.

Medical education was completed at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where he was awarded membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Postgraduate medical education was completed at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire in both internal medicine and gastroenterology. In 1980 he was awarded resident of the year honors at that institution. He spent two years in the US Public Health Service practicing in an Appalachian community bridging his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship. A prime reason for moving to Florida was the opportunity to participate in a practice which focuses on acute care gastroenterology and hepatology as well as the opportunity to participate in the internal medicine residency training program at HCA Florida JFK Hospital. His practice is based in Loxahatchee. Professional interests include therapeutic endoscopy and chronic liver disease.

He has expertise in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, and liver biopsy performance and has performed several thousand of each of these procedures. He also offers performance and interpretation of video capsule endoscopy. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases, and the Florida Gastroenterology Association. Outside interests include bicycling and skiing.
