Abstract

In this chapter we will discuss the emerging issues and controversies in anemia management in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The normal physiologic control of erythropoiesis and the pathophysiology in CKD will be discussed specifically with regards to current problems with dosing protocols and novel approaches to improve these issues. The causes and treatments of resistance to erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs), hemoglobin "cycling" and variability will be addressed. The emerging safety concerns with ESAs and novel ESAs that may be safer will be discussed.
