About Mersema Abate

Mersema Abate is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Science Education and Internal Medicine at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Abate serves as one of the co-directors for the Advanced Clinical Experience (ACE) at Zucker School of Medicine.

Dr. Abate received her medical training in Jimma University, Ethiopia. She completed her Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship trainings at Stony Brook University Hospital. She joined Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health in 2019. She spends 50% of her time in the Medical School in the role of co-director for ACE primarily involved in Clinical Skills, Transitions and Core Learning. The remainder 50% of her time is spent in clinical care where she sees patients at Northshore University Hospital and 400 community drive in Manhasset. Her clinical and research areas of interest focus mainly on kidney transplantation.

Prior to joining Zucker School of Medicine, Dr. Abate was faculty at Stony Brook Medicine where she held numerous leadership roles in medical education including course director for the pre-clinical renal pathophysiology course, and director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship.

Dr. Abate is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges, American Society of Nephrology and American Society of Transplantation.
