Abstract
The insect order Phasmida is represented in the U.S. and Canada by 43 walking stick species in nine genera. Most of this diversity is confined to two families: the Timematidae, 21 species (Vickery 1993, Sandoval & Vickery 1996, Arment 2006); and the Diapheromeridae, 16 species (Arment 2006). The remaining three walking stick families known from the U.S. and Canada are the Phasmatidae, Pseudophasmatidae, and Heteronemiidae, each represented by two species (Arment 2006, Headrick & Wilen 2011). Collectively, the North American distributions of the species in the five families span an area that includes much of eastern North America (Manitoba to Quebec, south to the Gulf Coast) and extends west to Oregon and California (Arment 2006). Thus, walking sticks have been recorded from all of the 48 contiguous U.S. states and adjacent provinces except Washington, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Here, we report three recent independent discoveries of Parabacillus hesperus Hebard, 1934 (Heteronemiidae) in Washington. Prior to this report, the only published records of P. hesperus from the Pacific Northwest were two records from eastern Oregon, both listed in the original description (Hebard 1934). Following our discoveries, we surveyed the P. hesperus holdings in numerous collections both in and beyond the region, yielding no additional Washington records but providing the first records of this species for Idaho as well as several new Oregon records. Thus, we document herein the known distribution of P. hesperus in the Pacific Northwest, including the first records for any phasmid species in Washington and Idaho.
