Abstract
This chapter explains quality improvement methodologies and tools. It discusses the concepts of evidence-based practice and informatics skills. The chapter helps the reader to compare and contrast quality improvement and evidence-based practice. It reviews how outcome measures apply to quality improvement (QI) and evidence-based practice and describes how technology and informatics skills support the process of analyzing outcomes measures. There are various tools to support QI methodologies: cause-and-effect diagram, check sheet, flowchart, gap analysis, histogram, pareto chart, run charts/control charts, scatter diagram, and workflow analysis. Cause-and-effect diagram allows for visualization by categorizing the potential causes of a problem to identify its root causes. Check sheet is a form for collecting and analyzing data that can be adapted based on the data needed. Gap analysis compares the current state and the future/desired state. Histogram is a plot that shows the underlying frequency distribution (shape) of a set of continuous data.
