About Melanie M. Domenech Rodriguez

Melanie M. Domenech Rodríguez is a Professor of Psychology at Utah State University; she began her appointment at USU in 2000. Her research focuses on family processes in Spanish-speaking Latino families. Dr. Domenech Rodríguez has been engaged in programs of intervention research in México, Puerto Rico, and Michigan. In México, Dr. Domenech Rodríguez engaged a preventive intervention trial of a Parent Management Training - Oregon (PMTO) intervention in Mexico City. This project is part of an active collaboration with researchers at the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría in Mexico City as well as research practitioners at Implementation Sciences International, Inc. The PMTO intervention sought to prevent the escalation of externalizing behavior problems into clinical syndromes. This project was partly possible due to Dr. Domenech Rodríguez’s prior research on the work culturally adapt, implement, and evaluate a PMTO intervention for Latino parents in northern Utah. She was Principal Investigator on the NIMH K01 grant that resulted in Criando con Amor: Promoviendo Armonia y Superación (CAPAS), the intervention manual which was implemented in Mexico City. CAPAS was implemented in Michigan, with support from an R34 grant to Dr. Rubén Parra-Cardona (PI; Dr. Domenech Rodríguez, co-I). In Puerto Rico, Dr. Domenech Rodríguez examined normative parenting practices in Puerto Rican families in preparation for a proposal for an intervention trial. This research was funded by a USU Research Catalyst grant to Dr. Domenech Rodríguez.

Dr. Domenech Rodríguez has been active in service to her profession. Notably she has served as president of the National Latina/o Psychological Association and Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. On her campus she serves as the Chair of the Institutional Review Board for the protection of human participants in research, a role that she deeply enjoys for its connection to the advancement of social justice in research and scholarship.

Dr. Domenech Rodríguez is a licensed psychologist in Utah and Idaho. She obtained her doctoral degree at Colorado State University in 1999. There she trained at the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Family Research Consortium - III at the University of Washington. Dr. Domenech Rodríguez was born and raised in Puerto Rico and currently lives in Logan, UT. She has two daughters.
