About Megan L. Smith

Dr. Megan L. Smith started at Boise State University in 2018 and is an Associate Professor with the School of Public and Population Health. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development from West Virginia University in 2015 specializing in adolescent development, risk and protective contextual factors, and school environments. She received her graduate level teaching degree from California State University, Chico and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Education from the University of California, Santa Cruz with an emphasis in special/at-risk populations. Dr. Smith’s early career years were spent in public education at the middle and high school level. Previously, she worked as a tenure-track assistant professor for West Virginia University’s School of Public Health. While there, she led the Child and Adolescent Health Research Initiative for the West Virginia Prevention Research Center (part of the CDC PRC network). Additionally, she was an active member of the Integrated Community Engagement (ICE) Collaborative which brings together a diverse group of stakeholders to identify and address youth mental health and substance abuse using theoretically sound, evidence based, and community relevant strategies, this effort is currently in its 5th year in West Virginia. Dr. Smith’s work focuses on substance use in adolescents, school climate, and academic motivation and achievement. She is currently affiliated with the American Educational Research Association, the American Public Health Association, and the American School Health Association to name a few. She is an advocate for vulnerable populations and has a fierce dedication to promoting community and adolescent health.
