Mapping Medievalisms at the Canadian Frontier (2010)
  • Megan Arnott
Abstract
Newfoundland's 2010 tourism campaign, using medievalisms to attract visitors, is the jumping off point for this exploration at the way that Vikings in North America have been perceived. I argue that Vikings are associated with North American founding mythology, which is evidenced by how often they are mentioned in conjunction with Christopher Columbus. I look at both the scholarly medievalism and the popular/tourist medievalism and the way those two forces interact with each other to create this mythology.
