About Dr Matthew J Leach

Dr Matthew Leach completed his Bachelor of Nursing degree at the University of South Australia in 1994. Practising as a Registered Nurse, Dr Leach became concerned by the paucity of available treatment options for people presenting to hospital with chronic health conditions, and the range of possible treatments available through complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). With a keen interest in integrative health care, Dr Leach completed a Diploma of Applied Science (Naturopathy) in 1999 and began practising as a Naturopath. Dr Leach soon became concerned about the lack of clinical evidence for many of the interventions prescribed by Naturopaths, which led Dr Leach to pursue a research career to build the evidence-base of CAM. Dr Leach completed his Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) in 2001, and then his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2005. Dr Leach was appointed lecturer in naturopathy in the school of health sciences, at the University of South Australia in 2004, and has since taught in naturopathic medicine, nursing, nutrition, evidence-based practice, and human physiology. Over this time, Dr Leach has published numerous papers on clinical research, evidence-based practice, integrative medicine and professional issues in nursing and CAM. Dr Leach is still a lecturer in health sciences at the University of South Australia, and still practices as a Registered Nurse.
