About Matthew J. Darr

Dr. Matthew J. Darr holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering from The Ohio State University and a Master of Science Degree from the University of Kentucky Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. Prior to accepting a faculty position at Iowa State, Dr. Darr was employed by The Ohio State University (2004–2007) as a Research Associate. During his tenure there Dr. Darr was honored as the Price Chair Outstanding Teacher in 2006 and the Outstanding Staff Service Award in 2007. Dr. Darr has an expertise and background in advanced machinery engineering, embedded data
acquisition and instrumentation, and machinery logistical analysis. Dr. Darr’s current research emphasis includes equipment development for enhanced densification and logistics for cellulosic biomass feedstock, optimized storage and material upgrading for long term biomass feedstock stability, and machinery automation
to support both biomass feedstock collection and optimal fertilizer placement. Dr. Darr has published 10 peerreviewed journal articles, 25 conference papers and proceedings, and has one patent. He has been PI or Co-PI on 17 grants or contracts totaling over $2,300,000. Dr Darr is a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE, past officer of the ASABE Precision Agriculture Committee(PM-54) and member of the ASABE Automation (PM-58) and Student Design Competition (P-126)committees.
