Dr. Grol is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Western Ontario. He is also a Scientist in the Division of Genetics and Development at the Children’s Health Research Institute (CHRI) and Lawson Health Research Institute. Dr. Grol completed his doctoral degree at Western University in the laboratory of Dr. S. Jeffrey Dixon, where I investigated the role of P2 nucleotide receptor signaling in bone mechanobiology. Following his Ph.D., he moved to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and joined the laboratory of Dr. Brendan H. Lee as a postdoctoral fellow, being promoted to Instructor in 2018. During his time at Baylor, Dr. Grol’s research focused on evaluating gene therapies for Osteoarthritis (OA) and investigating tendon pathologies in preclinical models of connective tissue diseases such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). In July 2020, Dr. Grol returned to Western University as an Assistant Professor and joined the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and the Bone and Joint Institute.

In recognition of his research accomplishments, Dr. Grol received a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Musculoskeletal Biology and Health in January 2021 (2021-2026). He was also the recipient of the 2019 Harold M. Frost Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) in recognition of his contributions to the OA gene therapy field. In this regard, his postdoctoral work with Dr. Brendan Lee using viral gene therapy to treat OA has been approved for Phase I clinical trials, highlighting the translational potential of his research approach.
