Flipping the Health Sciences Classroom

Abstract
Attendees at this session will be given an overview of a flipped classroom experiment I implemented this semester with 400-level Exercise and Health Sciences class. This flipped classroom implementation first used a sequence of library pre-work and activities that students completed before class and then revolved around group work the students conducted together across two face-to-face classes at the library. The library pre-work included a set of modular activities, created in a LibGuide (http://umb.libguides.com/ehs460wright) and organized around a specific set of learning outcomes. Each module included a brief video or tutorial and was followed by a practice activity on a worksheet (http://umb.libguides.com/ld.php?content_id=15783021) that all students completed using an assigned topic (in this case, the effect of energy drinks on exercise). After completing the 6 brief modules and activities, students came to class and worked in groups to complete the same activities, this time adapting each module for their own individual topic to practice transferring skills from a pre-formed to an unformed topic. Students worked together in class to share their individual topics then identify keywords, subject terms, MeSH terms, and other research strategies for those topics. Attendees at this lesson will be given an overview of the pre-work LibGuide, activities, and worksheet, and they will be given the opportunity to complete one of the modules individually and then work in small groups to replicate a portion of this flipped classroom, group-based learning experience. Participants will then be given time to brainstorm possible adaptations of this flipped model for their own classes.
