Academic librarians working in academic libraries today continue to fulfill traditional functions, even as they pursue exciting opportunities made possible by the digital revolution in scholarly publication. At my institution, for instance, we continue to serve as a place for quiet study and solitary reflection. In addition, we satisfy new needs for collaborative learning spaces, well equipped with productivity software and ably supported by professional expertise. These emerging service priorities reflect revolutionary changes in higher education pedagogy.
