Abstract
The aim of the essay is to survey the main issues raised by global indicators. To this purpose, the paper first places the historical rise of global indicators in the wider cultural context of the increasing power of quantitative knowledge, and then investigates who makes global indicators, how, for what purposes, and with what effects. The concluding part examines the dangers posed by global indicators and sketches out some proposals for possible solutions.
