Abstract
Institute’s conference, Hrvatska u Modernom Svijetu: Čestertonijanski pogled (Croatia in the Modern World: a Chestertonian View), which was held on May 22, 2019 at the Croatian-Catholic University in Zagreb, Croatia. It was the second conference the Institute had organised in Zagreb. The first, which took place twenty-six years earlier, focused on the question of how East-Central Europe would weather the transition from Soviet-style communism to Western capitalism.
Although the Soviet Union had been on the brink of collapse for several years, it still was not clear how these fledgling democracies would fare on their own. The attendees of that first conference must have been surprised and pleased by the relatively peaceful transition to democratic rule that most of these nations made over the next two decades.
