Marshall University to host the Fourth Annual Festival of New Music Thursday February 28; Friday, March 1, 2013.

The fourth annual Festival of New Music held on Marshall University’s Huntington campus will feature the music of Esin Gündüz, Kelly Rossum, Marc Satterwhite, Gabriel Araújo and others. Guest performers include Lindsey Goodman, principal flautist of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra; violinist, Anyango Yarbo-Davenport; Ad hoc, Faculty Chamber Ensembles from Marshall, and Morehead State Universities, and MU Contemporary Music Ensemble. All events are free and open to the public.

Thursday evening and Friday noon concerts feature a variety of chamber music including works with electronic media and many U.S. premieres of works composed within the past two years including three new commissioned works by Mark Zanter; Suite, Gestures II, and The Persistence of Memory. Dr. Mark Zanter, Festival Coordinator states: “Those with an interest in contemporary music will experience an exciting array of new works.”

The Friday evening concert will feature a performance of Kelly Rossum’s score to the John S. Robertson’s 1920 film, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. “Rossum’s jazz inspired score adds an entirely new dimension to viewer’s experience of the film; an experience that is informed by ones knowledge of cinema and of film and popular music tropes. Rossum’s interpretation of Jekyll’s struggle with “good and evil” adds a modern twist to the classic tale.”

Dr. Marc Satterwhite, coordinator of the Grawemeyer Award in music composition, will give a presentation at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 28 in Drinko Library room 341. The discussion will focus on issues concerning composition, and composing concert music.

The full concert schedule includes 8 p.m. Thursday, Smith Recital Hall; noon Friday, MUsic Alive series, First Presbyterian Church, 1015 5th Ave., Huntington; 8 p.m. Friday, Smith Recital Hall on the Marshall Campus.
