About Mark Pope

Mark Pope, a Curators’ Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Education Sciences and Professional Programs in the College of Education, died unexpectedly on Jan. 29, 2023. He was 70.
 
Pope spent more than two decades at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, beginning in 1997 and continuing until his retirement in 2018, and was widely considered to be one of the founders of and leading authors in the field of cultural diversity issues in career counseling and career development, especially gay and lesbian career development. 

Dr. Pope is widely considered to be the founder of and one of the leading authors in the field of cultural diversity issues in career counseling and career development, especially gay and lesbian career development. His primary area of interest and research was in multicultural career counseling, especially gay/lesbian, Native American, and Asian career development issues. He had also written on the history and development of professional counseling in general and career counseling in particular in the USA and other countries, LGBTQI+ issues, violence in the schools, and Native American traditional healing as well as a number of books on instructional resources for teaching about career counseling, multicultural counseling, social justice and advocacy, and sexual and gender minorities.

He published 11 books, over 40 chapters in books, over 40 articles in professional journals, and more than 170 presentations at international, national, regional, and state professional conferences. Dr. Pope was also a committed internationalist and had written on the historical development of career counseling in the US, China, and Malaysia, and keynoted and presented at career development conferences in China, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Scotland, and throughout the United States.
