Abstract

Bacteria belonging to the genus Rickettsia are small Gram negative bacteria in the Alphaproteobacteria that exhibit unique adaptations and specific characteristics suited to obligate replication in the cytoplasm of their host cells. We briefly describe the microbiology of Rickettsia and provide a review of classic and contemporary approaches being applied to their phylogeny, diversity and taxonomy.
