Abstract

Pacifism, political and industrial reform, and neighborhoods that nourish bodies and spirits are deeply interwoven in Jane Addams's vision of social democracy. Peace in international relations and peacemaking in daily activities are intimately connected and mutually supportive. I first briefly explain Addams's pragmatism and evolutionary theory of ethics, which provide a theoretical framework, and then describe how, for Addams, pacifism and day-to-day peacemaking are both integral to enacting social democracy.
