About Marie Sarantakis

Marie Sarantakis is a juris doctor candidate at The John Marshall Law School. She currently serves as Magister of Phi Delta Phi –Stevens Inn, President of the Justinian Society, President of the ADR Society, Student Representative for the Illinois State Bar Association, and on the Young Professionals Board of Illinois Legal Aid Online.
Ms. Sarantakis is completing her candidacy on The John Marshall Law Review while serving as a Teaching Assistant for Property Law and a Research Assistant for Constitutional Law. She obtained two CALI awards this past spring in Evidence and Constitutional Law. In addition, she has been honored with the inaugural Anthony J. Fornelli Emerging Leaders Award from the Cook County Justinian Society along with the William J. Bauer Award from the DuPage County Bar Association. Ms. Sarantakis is a certified mediator and serves on the Illinois State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and Family Law Section Council.
Prior to attending The John Marshall Law School, Ms. Sarantakis obtained her B.A. from Carthage College, where she majored in Political Science, Philosophy, and Sociology. While attending Carthage she worked as a student instructor for Constitutional Law and Statistics, and also as a research assistant to Professor Wayne Luther Thompson, conducting research on the social ecology of congregations. Ms. Sarantakis presented the findings of her original research at conferences across the Midwest.
Ms. Sarantakis is the first member of her family to attend college, much less go to law school. Her family emigrated from Greece and Ms. Sarantakis speaks English as a second language. Despite some of the initial challenges of the language barrier in the early part of her academic career, Ms. Sarantakis’s determination, fearless, and tenacity have contributed to her academic successes. Her family owned a video store during her childhood, and Ms. Sarantakis was homeschooled in the family business throughout middle school. Her family has since sold their business and economically things have been challenging. Ms. Sarantakis decided to attend law school to create a better life for her family. In addition to attending law school in the evenings, Ms. Sarantakis is working as a manager at a family fun center and interning at a family law firm to support her education.
While not engrossed in her studies, Ms. Sarantakis enjoys traveling and writing. She published an Amazon best-seller in the Summer of 2012 and is currently working on her second book discussing Millennials in the workplace.
