Abstract
In this workshop, we consider how accent discrimination impacts UFV’s multilingual students and faculty. We will share some research on the links between accent discrimination and racism and discuss the different ways that accent discrimination can surface in the classroom and other interactions, including the most common microaggressions such as “your English is so good!” and “where are you from?”. Together, we will brainstorm ways to make classrooms a more welcoming space for different Englishes and for instructors or staff who struggle with accents different than their own. Participants will also take away some actions for confronting discrimination when they see it, hear it, or recognize it within themselves.
