About Maria D. Avgerinou

Having been exposed to various education systems (Greek, French, British, and currently the American one), my education record consists of a B.Litt. in Medieval and Modern Greek (University of Athens, Greece); an M.Ed. in Instructional Technology, and a Ph.D. in Visual Literacy, Assessment and Integrated Research Methods (both from the University of Bath, United Kingdom). I have also received an Online Education and Training (OET) Qualification from the University of London, United Kingdom, and more recently a Certificate in Distance Education by Indiana University. I have extensive experience in various levels of Higher Education -such as teaching, research, and faculty development- and I have also worked as an Instructional Design, Research and Evaluation consultant in Greece and the United States.
My professional publications are focused mostly on the areas of Visual Literacy, Action Research, and Online/Blended Learning. Among other professional activities and affiliations, I am an active member of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), and the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA President 2008-09, IVLA09 Conference Chair; Senior Editor of IVLA's Selected Readings).
I am currently attached to the School of Education of Depaul University, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Policy and Research. I also direct the Center for Educational Technology and Excellence in e-Learning, Teaching and Research (CEeLTRET). My primary research interests include Implications of New Teaching and Learning Technologies for Education and Training; the Development of Visual Communication/Literacy, Visual Learning and Visual Thinking Skills; Managed Learning Environments and Tutor/Learner *Emerging* Identity; and Action Research for the Reflective Practitioner.
