At the Crossroads of Amnesia or Acknowledgment: White People and Racial (In)Justice
National Communication Association Convention (2020)
  • Margret McCue-Enser, St. Catherine University
Abstract
The U.S. has an undeniably racist history. Movement toward racial equality has been underway for decades, but progress is thwarted by a lack of direct acknowledgment of and apology for past racial abuses. Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, has called for an "era of truth and justice" (NPR, 2020). As communication scholars, we are uniquely poised to play a potent role in furthering the national discourse on racial justice by engaging in strategic truth-telling. This panel will discuss (a) White people's collective amnesia toward racial terror and injustice and (b) methods of acknowledgment and truth-telling.
