Presentation
Onboarding new employers: turning outsiders into insiders
Idaho Library Association Annual Conference 2019 (2019)
  • Margie Ruppel
Abstract
Onboarding is often used interchangeable with the terms "orientation" and "training" for new employees. The onboarding experience is unique, however, due to its focus on the individual's needs and fostering social connections for the new employee. Research reveals that successful onboarding makes employees feel like they are part of the team, and thus more likely to stay with the organizations. During this panel presentation, library staff from various generations and library types talked about their onboarding and orientation experiences. Panel questions included:
  1. Please describe your best onboarding experience. What made it so good?
  2. Describe your worst onboarding experience. What could have made it better?
  3. Describe your ideal onboarding experience.
  4. How much do you think social connections factor into whether a new employee stays or goes?
