Abstract

Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis is a critical skill healthcare professionals need to possess in order to provide safe and competent patient care. Nursing interventions focus on maintaining patients’ alveolar exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) or oxygen (O2) by analyzing arterial blood gas concentrations. However, many student nurses and novice healthcare professionals struggle in learning how to decipher and understand this frequently ordered laboratory test. A multimedia Internet based learning tutorial including nine case studies and multiple-choice questions was developed to assist nursing students enrolled in an introduction to pathophysiology course. The tutorial is a homework assignment for students enrolled in the course and an open source instructional tool offered to the global online community. Qualitative results indicate the online tutorial promotes understanding of blood gas analyses and aids in the application of knowledge in the clinical setting.
