It’s Alive! But What Kind of Creature is National Theatre Live’s Frankenstein?
Studies in Popular Culture (2013)

Abstract

The National Theatre's production of Danny Boyle's Frankenstein received critical acclaim, especially for the Olivier Award-winning lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, when it ran in London in early 2011. Beginning in summer 2011, National Theatre Live has annually broadcast recordings of the popular play internationally. The recorded version brings up several questions about the nature of live theatrical performance and film. By presenting a recording of the play, which was filmed and minimally edited before it was broadcast cinematically, NT Live has created a controversial hybrid between film and theatrical performance.
