“New Tourist Sights, Slights, and Sleights-of-Hand in Treme”
HBO's Treme and Post-Katrina Catharsis: The Mediated Rebirth of a City (2017)

Abstract
Through close readings of pivotal scenes and tourist promotional materials, intertextual analysis, and historical methods, I examined the ways that Treme has both eschewed and championed the city’s contemporary racialized tourism narrative and explore its implications for New Orleans’s post-Katrina recovery. Like other mass-mediated representations of post-Katrina New Orleans, Treme both resuscitates and revises dominant popular narratives of the city that have long defined its tourist identity, reassembling popular images and tropes of the city in new and familiar ways. Together, these post-Katrina productions create new tourism narratives in response to—and as a way to profit from—shifting understandings of authenticity in New Orleans culture.
