About Luther Trey Denton (Emeritus)

Trey Denton joined the Faculty of Georgia Southern University in 1992. He retired on July 31, 2020. Hewas awarded Professor Emeritus of Marketing on August 1, 2020.  Trey earned a BA in psychology from Emory University in 1982.  He earned his MBA from Emory University in 1986 and his Ph.D. in marketing from the University of Georgia in 1991. He lived and taught in Hong Kong from 1989-1991 at the Hong Kong Baptist College (now University) as he worked on his dissertation that concerned marketing of U.S. products in China.  Since joining Georgia Southern in 1992, he has received both College of Business and Georgia Southern University Awards for Excellence in Teaching. He is also the recipient of the College of Business Award for Contributions in Service. In 2004, he was named the College of Business Administration William A. Freeman Professor of the Year.  He chaired the last two Presidential Search and Screen Committees that produced Georgia Southern’s last two presidents, including President Bruce Grube in 1999 and President Brooks Keel in 2010.  In 2010 he earned the Jane White Marketing Scholar Award.  In 2011 he was recognized with the Outstanding First Year Advocate award from Georgia Southern. In addition to his duties as professor, he is currently the Coordinator of the COBA Honors Office and serves on the Georgia Southern University Honors Faculty Advisory Council.

Trey has conducted corporate training, marketing, and/or strategic planning sessions for many companies and organizations including Sea Island Bank, Crider Foods, BSC-America, Georgia Pacific, Willingway Hospital, the Chatham County Public Health Department, Eagle Bank, Fokker Aerotron, Hercules, IKEA, Carson Products, JCB, Robbins Smokehouse, Frederica Academy, the Averitt Center for the Arts, Friends of Georgia Libraries, Hollingsworth and Vose, Savannah Technical College-Effingham, and Leadership Southeast Georgia.  Between 1999 and 2006, Trey served as the Chair of the Georgia Southern Strategic Planning Council, the group charged with creating and guiding the strategic planning processes of Georgia Southern University.  He was a member of the SACSCOC Leadership Team that facilitated Georgia Southern’s successful reaffirmation in 2007. His research appears in journals such as the International Journal of Bank Marketing, Journal of Marketing Education, Marketing Education Review, Journal of Management, Journal of International Food and Agribusiness Marketing, Journal of International Consumer Marketing, International Journal of Commerce and Management, Journal of Management Education, and the Journal of Transportation Management.

Trey is a licensed falconer and lives on a small farm in Statesboro, Georgia, with his wife Wendy, assistant director in the Georgia Southern Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement where she heads the service learning initiative. They have three adult children and greatly enjoy empty-nesting.
