Item Effects as Indicators of Subjective Organization in Serial Learning
The American Journal of Psychology (1974)

Abstract
In serial learning, subjects impose consistent idiosyncratic structure in order to aid their performance, as Martin (1973) has shown. The present analyses indicated that there may be considerable consensus among subjects' imposed structures, that performance differences among items are strong and stable over a variety of task variables, and that these attributes can be predicted fairly well when an item plus its immediate context are considered.
