Abstract
This exploratory essay argues that economic forces and scientific advances will inevitably lead to an integration between Chinese and western medicine. Chinese medicine can serve as medicine of the poor for the developing world and can enhance the quality of life for people in the developed countries. There is a case for part of the development aid to developing countries to be channeled to the promotion of Chinese medicine. However, caution should be exercised to avoid presenting Chinese medicine as competing with practitioners in local traditional medicine. There is a huge market for Chinese traditional medicine as it gains more credibility and acceptance. Governments and commercial interests should work together to exploit this market.
