Abstract

Organic chemistry instructors are always looking for ways to engage students early in the semester, decrease DFWs, and increase learning. This chapter describes the use of pass/fail competency quizzes designed to provide early feedback, increase engagement and foster understanding. The quizzes are low stakes but required. Though final exam scores did not improve after the use of competency quizzes, student responses to their use indicate positive engagement with the course material and instructors.
